Becoming An Amity English Teacher In Japan

Amity built its outstanding reputation on an education rich curriculum, dynamic teaching methodology, and high quality teachers. Successful Amity Teachers are energetic and enthusiastic when working with children, are keen observers and quick learners that use the Amity teaching methodology effectively, and who are adaptable and flexible to cultural and workplace expectations in Japan.

To become an Amity Teacher, candidates must:

Be native level speakers of English having conducted their schooling (from elementary school through university) in English. Have a Bachelor’s Degree (all majors considered). Candidates in the final semester of a Bachelor’s Degree are also welcome to apply.

Qualities considered assets:

Experience working with children formally or informally
Sales and business experience
An outgoing and child-friendly personality

The initial contract is for one year.
Working Hours

Working Hours

Native English Teachers work a 5-day, 40-hour work week from Tuesday to Saturday. Working hours can be 10AM-7PM, 11AM-8PM or 12PM-9PM.
Monthly Salary

275,000 yen before taxes and deductions
255,000 yen (monthly base salary)
20,000 yen (Fixed Non-Standard Work Time Allowance)
Overtime

Overtime

Based on the needs of the branch school, Native English Teachers may be required to work outside of their standard work time hours and will need to submit for overtime.
Bonus System

Bonus System

Amity offers a monetary bonus for Native English Teachers who teach 32 lessons or more on average per week for a calendar month.
Housing

Housing

A furnished, rent-subsidized, single-occupancy apartment is provided. Key money and deposits are paid for by Amity. The teacher pays 45,000 yen per month for rent while Amity pays any additional costs directly to the landlord. Teachers are responsible for all utility costs.
Social Insurance And Pension

Social Insurance And Pension

Native English Teachers are enrolled in the Japanese Social Insurance System (Shakai Hoken) providing comprehensive health insurance and pension insurance. Approximately 42,000 yen is deducted from the monthly salary for enrollment.
Vacations, Holidays and Paid Days Off

Vacations, Holidays and Paid Days Off

All Japanese national holidays that occur on a regular workday are paid days off.
From the start of the sixth month of a teacher’s first year contract with the company, the company provides between 15-17 paid days off. NETs are eligible to request the dates for five of those days The company designates dates for the remaining days.
These paid days off are built within the three one-week company designated vacation periods held throughout the year.
Transportation

Transportation

Airfare to and from Japan is the responsibility of the Native English Teacher. Ground transportation to all company functions and commuting costs (if applicable) are covered. A Transportation Stipend of 60,000 yen is provided upon completion of the final contract for candidates hired internationally.

Training

Training

Native English Teachers receive one-week of paid Initial Training upon arrival in Japan. Accommodations for Initial Training are provided by Amity. Ongoing training, including a Shadow Week at the branch school and Follow-up Training, are provided throughout the contract period.
Completion Bonus

Completion Bonus

A one-time cash bonus is provided upon completion of the final contract as follows:
12 months = 65,000 yen
24 months = 150,000 yen
36 months = 170,000 yen
48 months = 190,000 yen
60 months and more = 210,000 yen
For candidates hired domestically, the completion bonus scale differs.
